EU to Criticize Georgia's Democracy Progress in 2025 Enlargement Package
The European Commission is set to unveil its 2025 Enlargement Package in Brussels, including a detailed evaluation of Georgia's democratic reforms and EU membership bid. Georgia's Foreign Minister, Maka Bochorishvili, has expressed skepticism about the report, citing political bias from the European Union.
Bochorishvili's doubts stem from the EU's statements and actions throughout the year. She believes these indicate a political bias towards Georgia. The upcoming report is expected to criticize the Georgian government for significant setbacks in democracy and the rule of law. It may also highlight repressive laws, political instrumentalization of the justice system, and restrictions on basic rights. The EU might downgrade Georgia's status to a mere candidate country on paper.
Bochorishvili has already rejected the commission's evaluation and frozen EU accession talks in response.
The European Commission's 2025 Enlargement Package is due to be released soon, with Georgia's EU membership bid and democratic reforms under scrutiny. Despite Georgia's concerns, the EU will present its assessment based on the progress made and challenges faced by the country.
