€22,000 Diamond and Apple Watch Smuggled Into Frankfurt Airport
Customs officers at Frankfurt Airport have uncovered a smuggling attempt involving a diamond and a luxury Apple Watch. The items, worth around €22,000, were found in the luggage of a German resident returning from Dubai. Authorities have since launched criminal proceedings against the woman for tax evasion.
The discovery took place during a routine check at the airport. The woman, who had arrived from Dubai, initially insisted she had bought nothing on her trip. However, officers found a diamond and a high-end Apple Watch hidden in a package inside her suitcase.
Both items were in brand-new condition, and the traveller could not provide any proof of purchase in Germany. The diamond carried a Dubai certification, raising further suspicion. As a result, the goods were seized as evidence, and the woman now faces charges.
The prevented tax loss from this case amounts to €4,123.95. While no nationwide statistics exist for similar smuggling attempts in 2025 or 2026, Frankfurt customs reported a separate diamond smuggling incident on September 8, 2025.
The seized diamond and Apple Watch remain in custody as part of the ongoing investigation. If convicted, the woman could face penalties for tax evasion. This case highlights the vigilance of customs officers in detecting undeclared high-value goods.
