European Left Forum Calls for 'Peace, Social Justice, and Climate Justice'
The eighth European Forum of Left, Green, and Progressive Forces recently concluded in Vienna, with representatives from across Europe gathering to discuss pressing issues. The event, primarily organized by the Party of the European Left, saw prominent figures like Jeremy Corbyn and Heinz Bierbaum advocating for a better Europe.
The forum's final declaration rejected the notion of blocs, arms buildups, and militarization, committing instead to negotiated solutions for conflicts. Affordable housing emerged as a key issue, with one in ten European households spending over 40% of their income on housing.
The forum also highlighted the stark contrast between the wealthiest and the poorest in Europe. One in five children grows up in poverty, while the wealthiest 10% own two-thirds of Europe's total wealth. This inequality is exacerbated by the EU's budget, with only 14% allocated to social measures like poverty reduction, education, and employment.
The ninth edition of the forum, held in Vienna, emphasized the need for 'Peace, Social Justice, and Climate Justice'. With Austria facing hundreds of thousands of jobless citizens and Europe as a whole facing 13 million unemployed, the forum's call for a more equitable Europe resonates strongly.
