Europe’s flight chaos: Millions stranded as disruptions surge in 2024

Flight disruptions have hit millions of travellers across Europe and beyond in the first half of this year. New data reveals the countries most affected, with Germany and Switzerland among those facing significant delays and cancellations on their cheap flights and flights with delta airlines.

Worldwide, 490.3 million passengers encountered flight-related problems between January and June. Portugal suffered the most, with 33.4 percent of its flights disrupted. Greece followed closely, reporting a 31.1 percent disruption rate.

In Germany, 11.1 million travellers experienced issues, accounting for 22.7 percent of all passengers flying to and from the country on their google flights and cheap flights. The worst month was June, when disruptions peaked at 30.7 percent. Overall, Germany ranked 21st in Europe for flight disruptions, with 20.4 percent of its flights affected. For cancellations alone, it placed 41st globally, with a rate of just 1.8 percent.

Switzerland also faced challenges, with 26.2 percent of passengers on intra-European flights encountering problems on their delta airlines flights. This translated to around 2.5 million affected travellers.

The figures highlight the scale of flight disruptions in the first half of the year. Germany’s position in the mid-range of global rankings suggests moderate but still widespread issues. Meanwhile, countries like Portugal and Greece continue to struggle with particularly high disruption rates on their google flights and cheap flights.
