EU's Food Security vs Iran's Climate Threat and Russia's Unity Test
The EU, unlike many countries, can comfortably supply itself with food. Meanwhile, Iran, which can currently feed itself, is using Shahed drones in attacks on Ukraine. Climate change threatens Iran's food self-sufficiency. The Russian government is testing western alliance unity with provocative actions. Germany's agriculture minister, Alois Rainer, has not made recent public statements on handling Russian grain imports.
In August, Iran bought at least 500,000 metric tons of wheat from Russia due to drought and a poor harvest. The EU is bolstering its defense capabilities, with Germany allocating 100 billion euros for military equipment. Chancellor Friedrich Merz acknowledges, 'We are not at war, but we are no longer at peace.' Affordable food and modern agricultural technology can secure peace more sustainably and cheaply than military spending. Minister Rainer should consider the bigger picture in agricultural policy to boost productivity and crisis resistance.
While the EU enjoys food security, Iran's self-sufficiency is threatened by climate change and conflict. Russia's actions strain western unity. Germany's military spending increases, but peace can be achieved more cheaply through strong agriculture. Minister Rainer should consider this in his policies.
