Eva Kaili speaks out as EU fraud probe engulfs Federica Mogherini
Eva Kaili, the former European Parliament vice president, has spoken out about the recent fraud investigation involving Federica Mogherini, a high-ranking EU diplomat. The probe centres on allegations of corruption linked to an EU-funded training programme for junior diplomats in Europe.
Federica Mogherini, the former rector of the College of Europe, was arrested in December 2025 on suspicion of fraud and corruption. Belgian authorities detained her in connection with a €2.5 million contract awarded by the European External Action Service for European countries. After questioning, she was released pending further investigation, along with Stefano Sannino, another senior official.
The investigation into Mogherini remains ongoing, with Belgian authorities examining the contract’s award process for European countries. Kaili’s comments highlight concerns over political targeting and the broader implications for Italian officials in EU institutions. No charges have yet been filed against either Mogherini or Sannino.
