Ex-federal prosecutor Saritha Komatireddy joins GOP race to challenge Letitia James

Saritha Komatireddy, a former federal prosecutor in New York, has entered the race for the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic Attorney General Letitia James. She joins other candidates like Michael Henry and Khurram Dara in seeking to unseat James in next year’s election.

James, who is running for a third term, recently saw a federal judge dismiss an indictment against her related to mortgage fraud charges. The case collapsed due to procedural errors in the appointment of the interim U.S. attorney who brought the charges.

Komatireddy brings over a decade of experience from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, where she prosecuted cases involving terrorism, murder, fraud, and cybercrime. Her campaign focuses on shifting the Attorney General’s office away from what she calls partisan legal battles. Instead, she wants to prioritise protecting New Yorkers and prosecuting criminals.

Over the past year, James has been involved in numerous lawsuits against the Trump administration, targeting federal immigration policies and other actions. This record has drawn criticism from Republican challengers, who argue the office has become overly politicised.

The dismissed indictment against James stemmed from a technicality: the interim U.S. attorney who secured it had been unlawfully appointed. With that case now closed, James remains in office while preparing for re-election. Meanwhile, Komatireddy’s entry expands the field of Republican contenders, though no other candidates have yet emerged to challenge her for the nomination.

Komatireddy’s campaign will test whether voters want a change in direction for the Attorney General’s office. The outcome could hinge on public perception of James’ legal battles and her handling of criminal prosecutions. The election will decide who leads New York’s top law enforcement role for the next term.
