Ex-MP demands full-time defence minister to bolster Ghana's security
A former MP for Anyaa Sowutuom has urged President John Dramani Mahama to appoint a full-time defence minister. Dr Dickson Adomako Kissi warned that delays in filling the role could harm national security and investor confidence in the country.
The call comes after a military helicopter crashed in Tema on March 16, 2026, killing two people. Adomako argued that the incident highlights the need for strong defence leadership.
Currently, Cassiel Ato Forson holds the defence portfolio alongside his finance role. Adomako claimed this dual responsibility strains Forson's ability to manage both sectors effectively. He stressed that combining the two positions risks weakening coordination on security matters. Adomako also linked investor confidence to Ghana's security environment. He warned that gaps in defence leadership could deter potential investments, affecting economic stability.
Adomako's remarks put pressure on the government to address the defence minister vacancy. The former MP insists a dedicated minister would improve security oversight and restore confidence. The issue follows recent concerns over military safety and economic risks.
