SPD Politician Mesarosch to Become State Leader After Outburst - Ex-MP Robin Mesarosch launches bold SPD leadership bid in Baden-Württemberg
Robin Mesarosch, a former Bundestag lawmaker, has become the first candidate for SPD leadership in Baden-Württemberg. His announcement follows the party's weak showing in the state election earlier this month. Mesarosch gained attention after a sharp critique of the party's campaign strategy went viral online.
Mesarosch, a native of Sigmaringen, served as an MP for Zollernalb-Sigmaringen from 2021 until 2025. After leaving the Bundestag, he stayed active in local politics as SPD district chairman in Sigmaringen.
The party's poor result of 5.5% in the Baden-Württemberg state election on March 8, 2026, prompted Mesarosch to speak out. On March 16, he posted an Instagram video criticising outgoing state secretary-general Sascha Binder and the party's direction. In the same video, he declared his candidacy for SPD state chairman. With a larger social media following than SPD co-leaders Lars Klingbeil and Bärbel Bas, Mesarosch has proposed key changes. His platform includes narrowing policy focus, strengthening member input, and improving internal communication. The leadership election is scheduled for June 20, 2026.
Mesarosch's bid comes at a critical time for the SPD in Baden-Württemberg. His campaign centres on reforming the party's strategy and engaging its base more effectively. The outcome of the June vote will determine whether his approach gains broader support.
