Tracing German-German History: Marburg-Biedenkopf Adult Education Center Excursion to the Gießen Emergency Reception Camp Learning and Remembrance Site on April 18
Explore Cold War history at Gießen's Emergency Reception Camp tour
Marburg-Biedenkopf – On Saturday, April 18, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM, an excursion will take place at the Gießen Emergency Reception Camp Learning and Remembrance Site (Meisenbornweg 27). The Marburg-Biedenkopf County Adult Education Center (vhs) is organizing the event, with participation costing €3.20. The site, which opened in summer 2025, commemorates Gießen's unique role in German-German history.
In Gießen, refugees and emigrants from East Germany could submit their emergency admission applications—a process that provided initial assistance but also involved bureaucratic hurdles. Since reunification, the city has continued to welcome refugees from around the world. The excursion includes a guided tour highlighting key exhibits from the permanent exhibition, followed by an opportunity for participants to explore the displays independently.
Due to organizational requirements, advance registration is mandatory—either online at www.vhs.ourwebsite or in writing via the registration form at the vhs Marburg Land office (phone: 06421 405-6710). The deadline for registration is April 10. Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements. For inquiries, the vhs Marburg Land office can be reached at 06421 405-6710.
