Fake video falsely claims Germany fast-tracked 40,000 migrant citizenships before elections

A fake video has spread online with claims that Germany granted citizenship to over 40,000 migrants in just three months. The video suggests this was done to boost support for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) ahead of local elections. Fact-checkers have now confirmed the footage is entirely fabricated.

The misleading video carries the Bild logo but was never published by the outlet. Instead, it uses stock footage to create a false narrative. The VoxCheck Team investigated and found no evidence of mass naturalisations in Germany.

No other media organisations have reported on such a scheme. The video also falsely quotes researcher Daniele Archibugi, claiming he linked similar tactics to Moldova's elections. Archibugi never made such a statement. Germany's 2024 citizenship reform, which took effect on June 27, reduced residency requirements from eight to five years and allowed dual citizenship. However, the law did not include any special measures to speed up citizenship grants before elections. In January 2025, the Bundestag rejected a CDU/CSU proposal for stricter controls on naturalisations ahead of the 2025 federal election, following debates about potential electoral interference.

The debunked video contains no credible information. Germany has no record of mass citizenship grants tied to election timing. The false claims remain unconfirmed by any official source or independent investigation.
