Far-right AfD gains ground as local initiative wins mayoral race in Bavarian town
The small Bavarian town of Frensdorf, home to around 5,400 people, has seen a shift in its local politics after the March 8, 2026 council elections. The far-right AfD secured the largest share of votes, while a local initiative candidate claimed victory in the mayoral race.
The AfD emerged as the strongest party in Frensdorf's municipal council election, winning 16.9% of the vote. This result gives them three seats on the 20-member council, with Thomas Müller, Nicole Büttner, and Anita Winkler elected as representatives.
In the mayoral contest, Mario Miguletz of the Frensdorf Community Initiative won decisively with 65.99% of the vote. AfD's Thomas Müller came second, receiving 24.04%.
Three local voter associations followed closely behind the AfD. The Active Voters' List, the Frensdorf Community Initiative, and the Reundorf Citizens' List each secured between 13.1% and 14.2% of the vote. These groups will each hold three council seats. Meanwhile, the Christian Social Union (CSU) will occupy two seats.
The election results place the AfD as the largest single party in Frensdorf's council, though without an outright majority. Mario Miguletz's strong mayoral win ensures the Frensdorf Community Initiative retains key influence. The new council will now begin its term with a mix of party and independent representation.
