Investigations into Mosque Fire in Oberharz am Brocken Concluded - Far-Right Arson Attack Destroys Muslim Prayer Room in Germany
A fire at a Muslim prayer room in Hasselfelde, part of Oberharz am Brocken, has been ruled a politically motivated arson attack. Authorities have linked the crime to far-right extremism after two suspects were identified. The incident follows a pattern of similar attacks across Germany in recent years.
The blaze broke out in the early hours, requiring around 100 emergency responders to bring it under control. Firefighters and police worked together to secure the scene before investigators took over.
Authorities quickly classified the attack as aggravated arson with a far-right motive. One of the suspects had already been flagged by domestic intelligence services, raising concerns about extremist networks. The case file has now been passed to the public prosecutor's office for further action.
Between 2021 and 2025, German officials recorded between 150 and 200 arson attacks or attempts on Muslim prayer rooms and Islamic centres. The numbers fluctuated yearly, with 28 incidents in 2023 and 35 in 2024 alone.
The investigation continues as authorities examine possible connections to broader extremist activity. The attack adds to a troubling trend of targeted violence against Muslim places of worship in Germany. Officials have not yet confirmed whether additional arrests will follow.
