Far-right extremists assault two musicians on Vienna subway after rally
Two young musicians were violently attacked on Vienna's U1 subway line on 26 July 2025. The assault, carried out by two 18-year-old far-right extremists, left one victim with a fractured cheekbone and both suffering mental distress. The attackers admitted to the crime but claimed the victims had provoked them.
The incident began after the attackers attended a far-right rally in the city. Boarding the subway, they chanted xenophobic slogans before targeting the two musicians. One victim, aged 24, was falsely assumed to be non-Austrian, while the other, 22, was also assaulted.
The 24-year-old suffered a broken cheekbone, severe bruising, and lasting psychological effects. The younger victim escaped with minor bruising but was equally shaken. Surveillance footage identified the attackers, leading to their arrest and conviction for joint assault.
A court handed down suspended sentences: one attacker received 20 months and a €320 fine, while the other was given 12 months. Both were ordered to complete anti-violence training and join a deradicalisation programme. Their convictions for grievous bodily harm in concert remain subject to appeal.
No official nationwide records track racially motivated attacks by right-wing extremists in Austria for 2025. The Graz Human Rights Report 2025 covers local security and violence trends but does not provide specific figures on such incidents.
The attack highlights the ongoing threat of far-right violence in public spaces. The victims continue to recover from physical and emotional harm, while the attackers face legal consequences and mandatory rehabilitation. Authorities have yet to release comprehensive data on similar incidents this year.
