AfD-aligned Union Files Lawsuit Against VW at Regional Labor Court - Far-right group Zentrum battles Volkswagen for workplace entry in landmark case
A far-right-linked employee group is pushing to enter Volkswagen's workplaces for the first time. Zentrum, an organisation with ties to the AfD party, has put forward candidates in this year's works council elections at the carmaker's Lower Saxony sites. The move has sparked legal disputes and resistance from Volkswagen management.
Zentrum was founded in 2009 at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim. Since then, it has expanded to other Daimler locations, including the Sindelfingen plant, where it currently holds three seats on the works council. At Untertürkheim, the group has nine representatives ahead of the 2026 elections.
Now, the organisation is targeting Volkswagen. It aims to field candidates at Volkswagen Group Services in Isenbüttel, Lower Saxony. However, the company has blocked its access to the site, arguing that Zentrum lacks the legal capacity to negotiate collective agreements.
The dispute has reached the courts. The Hanover Regional Labour Court is set to rule on Zentrum's appeal against Volkswagen's decision on May 12. The outcome will determine whether the group can proceed with its election campaign at the plant.
The case highlights growing tensions over far-right influence in German workplaces. If the court rules in Zentrum's favour, the group could gain a foothold in Volkswagen's labour structures. For now, the company maintains its position, barring the organisation from its facilities.
