FDP President Thierry Burkart Resigns in June 2025

Thierry Burkart, the lawyer who has been representing the canton of Aargau in the small chamber since 2019, has announced his resignation as FDP party president. Burkart, who took up the reins on October 2, 2021, will step down in June 2025. His successor will be determined at the Toggenburger Tagung on November 15, 2025, in Bütschwil.

Burkart, who is also an equestrian, believes that leading a party is like riding a horse, requiring constant adaptation and signaling leadership without force. He has supported increased resources for defense capability during the Europe war but held back on the issue of new EU contracts to avoid splitting the party. The FDP party stands by its position on EU contracts, allowing for different opinions and a democratic decision-making process.

Burkart accepts the party's election results with humility and believes that clearer positioning can help the party gain ground in the future. He will moderate a debate on EU contracts at the delegates' assembly but plans to hold back from expressing his personal opinion. Applications for candidacy to succeed him as party president are open until October 19, 2025, and a recommendation for the election will be made by the end of that month.

Thierry Burkart's resignation as FDP party president has opened the door for a new leader to be elected at the Toggenburger Tagung in November 2025. Burkart's leadership style, likened to riding a horse, has been marked by adaptability and democratic decision-making. His successor will have big shoes to fill as the party looks to gain ground in the future.
