Federal Law Enforcement Agency Sankt Augustin Accidentally Transports 15 Rodents in Cage During European Operations - German Police Save Animals in Essen
On the morning of August 27, 2025, a 38-year-old Swedish national found herself in a peculiar predicament at Essen Central Station in Germany. At 3:50 AM, she was checked by federal police, who observed her urinating on platform 4/6.
The woman was carrying a cage containing 15 rats, which were found to be in a cramped condition, with some rats stacked on top of each other. This led to concerns about the animals' welfare.
Following the incident, the police seized the rats and the woman was informed of her right to remain silent. She declined to discuss her plans for the rats, stating only that she wanted to travel through Europe with them.
The local veterinary office arranged for the rats to be taken in by the animal shelter "Tierheim Essen." The rats were found to be in a poor condition, likely due to the cramped quarters in the cage.
The woman now faces charges for violating the Animal Welfare Act and public indecency. It is unclear where she resides, as she is not a German national. After police procedures, she was allowed to continue her journey.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and adherence to animal welfare laws. It also highlights the need for vigilance by authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of all animals.
