Filipino American History Takes Center Stage at Smithsonian
November marks Filipino American Heritage Month in Sacramento, with Stockton's Filipino history taking center stage at the Smithsonian American History Museum in Washington, D.C. The exhibit, 'Filipino American History in the National Spotlight', is a collaboration between the Filipino American National Historical Society and filmmaker Meri Llanes, who produced the documentary 'The Delano Manongs'.
The exhibit pays homage to Filipino American labor leader Larry Itliong, whose leadership was instrumental in forming the United Farm Workers alongside Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. Itliong led the 1965 Delano Grape Strike, sparking the farm labor movement. The exhibit will feature historical artifacts, including items belonging to Itliong and three steamer trunks containing belongings of Filipino farmworkers from Stockton's Little Manila.
The Filipino American National Historical Society, a community pillar in downtown Stockton, aims to preserve and promote Filipino American history. The society's vice president, June Bond, a retired educator, teaches about Filipino culture and unity. The exhibit will run from November 20 through November 28 at the Smithsonian American History Museum.
The exhibit in Washington, D.C., is a testament to the rich history and contributions of Filipino Americans, with a focus on Larry Itliong's pivotal role in the farm labor movement. The display of historical artifacts and belongings of Filipino farmworkers from Stockton's Little Manila offers visitors a unique opportunity to discover their Filipino heritage and strength.
