Finland's Military to Host Major Winter Exercises in Late 2025
Finland's military is preparing for a series of significant winter exercises in late 2025, commemorating the 100th anniversary of ground-based air defense. Approximately 1,000 troops from Finland, the UK, and Sweden will participate in Exercise ADEX Mallet Strike 2/25. These drills aim to validate Finland's joint wartime capability and enhance interoperability with allies.
The exercises, including Northern Spike 25, Northern Strike 225, and Lapland Steel 25, will occur in November and December. They will cover joint operations, live-fire drills, and combined-arms maneuvers under harsh early winter conditions. Around 15,000 soldiers, including conscripts, reservists, and allied troops from the UK, Sweden, and Poland, will take part in these large-scale drills.
Exercise Lively Sentry 25 in southern Finland will focus on urban combat and brigade-level coordination with over 6,500 soldiers. Meanwhile, exercises near the border with Russia will test anti-tank, artillery, and multinational combat readiness. These drills aim to test the readiness of Finnish forces to defend the country under wartime conditions and serve as the final assessment for conscripts.
The upcoming exercises reflect Finland's commitment to modern warfare training and strengthening ties with its allies. They will provide valuable insights into Finland's joint wartime capability and help enhance interoperability with participating nations.
