Fire on MS Thames Highway triggers grounding in Emden's harbour
A fire broke out on a cargo ship in Emden's harbour on January 26. The blaze started in the engine room of the MS Thames Highway, a car carrier docked northwest of Borkum Island. Authorities have since grounded the vessel pending a full safety inspection.
The incident began when a fuel-carrying part in an auxiliary diesel engine failed. This malfunction triggered the shipping issue, though investigators later ruled out human error as the cause.
Two days after the blaze, a team of experts boarded the ship to examine the damage. The group included officers from Germany's Federal Bureau of Maritime Casualty Investigation, local Emden police, and a specialised maritime unit.
Following the investigation, the Schiffssicherheit authority imposed a sailing ban on the MS Thames Highway. The restriction remains in place until further inspections confirm the ship's safety.
The MS Thames Highway stays docked under official orders. The ban will only lift once maritime inspectors clear the vessel for travel. No classification society has yet been named in connection with the ongoing checks.
