Smuggling of Cars from Russia: Five Men in Court - Five men face trial for smuggling luxury cars and tax evasion in Germany
Five men are currently standing trial in Germany for smuggling luxury cars from Russia while evading millions in taxes. The case also involves bribery, fraudulent vehicle inspections, and forged documents between 2016 and 2020. Among the accused is a former TÜV inspector charged with taking bribes to falsify records.
The scheme centred on importing over 200 high-end vehicles into Germany without declaring them to customs. Prosecutors allege the cars were disguised as tourist travel to avoid detection. By bypassing taxes and fees, the group evaded payments totalling around €3.3 million.
Two of the defendants—a mechanic and a signmaker—are accused of paying bribes to secure fake registrations and skip mandatory inspections. A 62-year-old ex-TÜV inspector stands charged with accepting at least €500 per falsified inspection. Another co-defendant, the former owner of a vehicle registration service, allegedly arranged illegal registrations for up to €2,000 per car. The trial combines three separate indictments, covering commercial smuggling, organized fraud, document forgery, and corruption. Hearings began earlier this year and are expected to last 25 more days, with proceedings scheduled until June 26.
The case highlights a large-scale operation involving bribery, tax evasion, and falsified vehicle records. If convicted, the defendants could face significant penalties under German law. Officials have not yet released details on broader corruption trends among TÜV inspectors or registration staff.
