Flight Cancellation: Upcoming Air India Journey Suspended Due to Technical Difficulties - Flight disruption: Upcoming Air India journey requires cancellation due to technical issues.

In the wake of the horror of a fatal Air India plane crash, another Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner from the same carrier almost met a similar fate. On a Monday, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, designated flight AI315, destined for New Delhi from Hong Kong, aborted its flight mid-air due to suspected technical issues. The Indian news agency ANI reported this, citing informed sources. Reuters also confirmed the incident from another source.

Technical Glitch Derails Air India Plane: Flight to be Evaluated

The plane, having embarked around 12:20 local time, scaled up to roughly 22,000 feet (about 6.7 kilometers) before it started descending. By around 13:00, the crew sought local assistance, as explained by a spokesperson for Hong Kong's airport authority. The aircraft supposedly landed safely around 13:15. Fortunately, the bustling airport's operations remained undisturbed. The approximately seven-year-old aircraft, now, needs a thorough examination, the source declared. Neither Air India nor Boeing commented on the matter yet.

This sequence of events follows the calamity of a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operated by Air India, which plunged in a residential area of Ahmedabad on a Thursday after experiencing a rapid loss of altitude shortly after takeoff. The horror left only one passenger alive among 242 onboard. Regrettably, people on the ground were also casualties. India's aviation authority ordered an immediate inspection of all Boeing 787 aircraft run by domestic airlines in the aftermath.

In the meantime, recovery teams have managed to find the second flight recorder, essential for investigating the crash's causes. The voice recorder was retrieved at the crash site in Ahmedabad in the western state of Gujarat, as announced by the Indian government. The flight data recorder had been recovered earlier.

Authorities Ponder on Insights from Second Black Box

The reasons behind the crash remained unclear initially. Authorities hold high hopes of deriving significant insights from the examination of the flight recorders. The voice recorder records conversations in the cockpit. Both devices are also recognized as black boxes.

The Indian Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has reportedly embarked on a comprehensive investigation, as per government declarations. Parallelly, the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has joined the investigation as the aircraft was manufactured in the US. Sunday saw the Chief Secretary of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pramod Kumar Mishra, in Gujarat to ensure prompt aid, thorough investigations, and comprehensive support to the victims' families.

  • Flight Aborted

Interesting Findings:

  • The crash in Ahmedabad occurred quickly, with the plane climbing to about 625 feet before losing data transmission and beginning to descend as if it had lost power. This rapid descent is unusual, and investigations are being carried out to establish why the aircraft did not continue climbing as expected[2].
  • The Boeing 787-8 involved reported an average flight time of over 41,000 hours, which is typical for such aircraft. Importantly, Air India's chairman, N. Chandrasekaran, stated that the aircraft had a clean history with no prior maintenance issues reported. Both engines were recently serviced or replaced: the right engine was brand-new as of March 2025, while the left was last serviced in 2023 and due for maintenance in December 2025. No apparent technical faults or maintenance lapses were found on the aircraft before the accident[1][4].
  • Following the crash, Air India has scaled back its international widebody aircraft services by 15% temporarily and cancelled or postponed numerous flights involving Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners as the fleet faces increased scrutiny[3][5].
  • The Air India Dreamliner, despite facing technical issues that nearly led to another disaster, didn't suffer the same fate as the plane that crashed in Ahmedabad, as it successfully aborted takeoff and landed safely.
  • The financial and transportation sectors, along with the aviation industry, are closely monitoring the series of incidents involving Air India's Dreamliners, which could potentially impact their operations and profitability.
  • In the political arena, officials are working diligently to ensure thorough investigations, aid, and support to the victims' families, with the Chief Secretary of Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting the crash site in Gujarat.
  • The crash investigation, now including the examination of data from the second flight recorder, will be overseen by not only India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) but also the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), due to the aircraft's US manufacturing origins.
