Florida bans local DEI programs, empowering DeSantis to remove defiant officials
Florida's Republican-led Legislature has passed a bill banning local governments from funding or promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programmes. The measure also allows Governor Ron DeSantis to remove officials who violate the new rules. Critics argue it could lead to legal challenges and disrupt community initiatives across the state.
The bill, known as SB 1134, cleared the Senate in a 25-11 vote, with five Republicans joining Democrats in opposition. It later passed the House by 77-37, reflecting strong GOP support. Under the law, cities and counties will be barred from maintaining DEI offices or hiring inclusion officers.
Local governments found in violation could face lawsuits from individuals or groups. Opponents warn the restrictions may stifle community events and local decision-making. The legislation builds on earlier efforts to eliminate DEI programmes in Florida's state colleges and universities. With roughly 67 counties and over 1,700 municipalities affected, the law—signed by DeSantis in 2023—will take full effect by July 2026. Supporters claim it will cut costs by ending funding for DEI staff and initiatives.
The bill grants DeSantis authority to remove officials who defy the ban. Local governments must now adjust policies or risk legal action. The changes mark another step in Florida's broader push to dismantle DEI frameworks in public institutions.
