Florida Bar clears Matt Gaetz despite ethics storm over payments to women

The Florida Bar has chosen not to take disciplinary action against former U.S. Representative Matt Gaetz. This decision follows a review of allegations involving payments to women and misconduct claims. The case has sparked debate among legal ethics experts about how bar associations handle such matters.

In October 2022, Gaetz was reinstated by the Florida Bar after settling overdue membership fees. The move came months before the U.S. Department of Justice closed its federal investigation into him in February 2023. Prosecutors cited credibility problems with key witnesses, ending the inquiry without charges.

A House Ethics Committee report from January 2026 later detailed claims that Gaetz paid twelve women over $90,000 for sexual acts between 2017 and 2020. The report also included accusations of drug use, accepting lavish gifts, and obstructing investigations. One of the most serious allegations involved payments for sexual activity with a 17-year-old.

The Florida Bar's Grievance Committee reviewed the case but found no probable cause to launch an investigation. The committee drew a line between personal misconduct and offences that directly affect a lawyer's professional fitness. While no formal action was taken, the bar did urge Gaetz to consider his role as an officer of the court.

Legal experts remain divided over the decision. Some argue the bar should focus only on conduct that poses a clear risk to clients. Others believe broader ethical concerns should be addressed more firmly.

The Florida Bar's ruling means Gaetz will face no professional consequences from the organisation. The case highlights how legal regulators weigh personal behaviour against professional standards. For now, the matter remains closed unless new evidence emerges.
