Florida Lawmakers Push for Better Airspace Management Around Cape Canaveral
Florida's lawmakers have expressed concerns about the state's airspace activities, particularly around Cape Canaveral. Last year, the region saw 93 launches, with nearly 1,400 orbital assets sent to space. They've urged the Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to improve coordination and communication.
The lawmakers, led by U.S. Representative Greg Steube (R-Fla.), have highlighted inefficiencies in communication processes. They've requested the FAA to certify the Space Data Integrator (SDI) capability, which offers automated data processing, replacing traditional manual methods. The SDI is designed to enhance situational awareness and airspace management.
To facilitate better coordination, lawmakers have proposed the creation of an Airspace Coordination Team (ACT). This interagency body would bring together commercial airspace, defense, and tourism partners operating around Cape Canaveral. The DOT and FAA have been given until Nov. 14 to respond to these requests and provide updates on their efforts to improve coordination.
