Florida renames roads and airport to honor legends and fallen heroes
A new Florida bill has introduced several name changes to honour notable figures and fallen servicemembers. The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Don Gaetz, R-Niceville, includes renaming roads and an airport in recognition of political leaders, military sacrifice, and a legendary football coach.
The proposals cover multiple regions, from Tallahassee to Palm Beach County and Escambia County.
Under the bill, Tallahassee International Airport will add the name of legendary Florida State University football coach Bobby Bowden. This change celebrates his long-standing impact on the university and the community.
A section of College Avenue in Tallahassee will become 'President John Thrasher Memorial Boulevard'. Thrasher, a former Florida State University president and state lawmaker, is being honoured for his contributions to education and public service. The legislation also designates State Road 295 in Escambia County as 'Warrior Sacrifice Way'. This renaming pays tribute to three servicemembers killed in a 2019 terrorist attack at Naval Air Station Pensacola. Additionally, 125 miles of State Road 80 in Palm Beach County will now be called 'President Donald J. Trump Highway'. This follows an earlier naming of 'President Donald J. Trump Blvd' in the same county, near Palm Beach International Airport and Mar-a-Lago. No other Florida roads currently bear the names of former presidents or major political figures beyond these examples. The bill successfully passed the Senate, clearing the way for the changes to take effect.
The renaming measures will alter road signs and official records across Florida. The airport, highways, and streets will now reflect the legacies of those recognised by the state. The changes follow legislative approval and will be implemented in the designated areas.
