Forest managers successfully market walnuts: Business booms in Advent
In the heart of Hesse’s Ried region, forest managers Frank Flasche and Christine Straub have turned walnut farming into a thriving business. Their family-run farm, Wasserhof GbR, specialises in growing and selling walnuts, along with a range of walnut-based products. What began as a focus on regional forestry has now grown into a year-round enterprise.
Frank Flasche oversees the daily operations at Wasserhof GbR, where walnut cultivation takes centre stage. The farm grows both French varieties, such as Franquette and Fernor, and German types like Geisenheim 26 and Seifersdorfer Runde. These trees produce nuts that form the backbone of the business.
The farm doesn’t just sell whole walnuts. Customers can also buy walnut oil, walnut pesto, and even walnut liqueur. Demand peaks during the Christmas season, but products remain available all year. For those looking to start their own walnut groves, the farm offers young saplings for planting.
Processing and sales happen on-site, making Wasserhof GbR a self-contained operation. Flasche and Straub have built their work around sustainable forestry, blending traditional practices with modern walnut farming. Their approach ensures the land stays productive while meeting local and regional demand.
Wasserhof GbR now stands as a key supplier of walnuts and walnut products in Hessisches Ried. The farm’s mix of French and German varieties, along with value-added goods, keeps the business running smoothly. With saplings also for sale, Flasche and Straub are helping others enter the walnut-growing trade.
