Former classmates describe accused Brown shooter as 'brilliant' but arrogant and difficult

Claudio Neves Valente, the suspect in the fatal shooting of MIT professor Nuno Loureiro, was once a standout student at Instituto Superior Técnico in Portugal. Former classmates described him as brilliant but difficult, with a history of academic struggles and confrontations. His path later took him to Brown University in the US, where his time was cut short amid unusual claims.

Neves Valente first gained attention as a top physics student at Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon. There, he studied alongside Nuno Loureiro, the professor he is now accused of killing. Despite sharing academic excellence, the two had very different personalities, with Neves Valente known for his combative nature in class.

After completing his studies, Neves Valente briefly worked at the same institution. However, he was dismissed in 2000. His next move took him to Brown University in the US, where he enrolled as a graduate physics student. But his time there lasted only a year. Neves Valente later claimed the classes were too easy and criticised the living conditions. In a cryptic note before leaving, he described himself as 'the best liar.' His last known address was in Miami, and records show he obtained a US visa in 2017. What he did for work after returning remains unclear.

The case has drawn attention to Neves Valente’s troubled academic history and erratic behaviour. Authorities continue to investigate his background as they piece together the events leading to the shooting. His past actions and statements may provide further insight into the incident.
