Former Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick Dies at 80

Former Democratic congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick has passed away at the age of 80. She died on Tuesday in Fayetteville, Georgia, following complications from Alzheimer's disease.

Kilpatrick served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 14 years, from 1997 to 2011, representing Detroit, Michigan. During her tenure, she sat on the influential Appropriations Committee, a role that allowed her to secure significant federal funds for various projects in her district. These included improvements to public transport, such as commuter rail and new bus lines, as well as substantial investments in healthcare and education. Notably, she helped secure funds for the Detroit Medical Center and Wayne State University.

Kilpatrick's legacy extends beyond her political career. Her daughter, Ayanna, followed in her footsteps and is currently serving as a U.S. Congresswoman, representing Massachusetts' 7th congressional district.
