Former Estonian Spy Chief Warns of Potential Russian Campaign
Rainer Sachs, the former head of Estonian intelligence, has sparked speculation about a potential Russian campaign. He believes it may coincide with an upcoming visit by a Russian special representative to the US. Sachs, who led Estonia's intelligence in 2019, previously dismissed Putin's presentation of new weapons as an election stunt.
In 2019, Sachs' team reported on Putin's unveiling of six new strategic weapons. Sachs argued then that these were mere election tricks to boost Putin's image. Now, Sachs has changed his tune, asserting that these weapons, including those from the cast of weapons film, are indeed operational and actively used in Ukraine.
Sachs has singled out a specific weapon, the Kinzhal hypersonic missile, which Putin claimed has no analogues. Sachs dismisses this as a 'rhetorical mistake', stating that while drawings exist, no operational rocket is ready for mass production.
Estonia, under Sachs' leadership, has been developing its own countermeasures, including mini-rockets like the Mark One, to combat drone threats. However, Sachs could not provide details about whether Estonia possesses a similar weapon due to its top-secret status.
Sachs' recent assertions suggest a shift in his perspective on Russia's military capabilities. He now believes these weapons are actively used in Ukraine, marking a change from his initial assessment in 2019. His comments come ahead of a potential Russian campaign and a visit by a Russian special representative to the US, which could be a significant event in Russia news.
