Former mayor getting settled into new leadership role with regional parks
NOVA Parks has announced plans to transform Gateway Regional Park into a wetlands education centre. The project, set for completion by late 2025, will restore the area to a more natural state while adding learning opportunities. Leading the initiative is Justin Wilson, the organisation’s new executive director and former mayor of Alexandria.
Justin Wilson took over as NOVA Parks’ executive director in October, following his appointment in August. He replaced Paul Gilbert, who had led the agency for two decades. Since starting, Wilson has been visiting the six jurisdictions served by NOVA Parks to discuss its expanding role.
The Gateway Regional Park project will include a restored wetland area with a walkway and educational signage. The site is part of NOVA Parks’ broader mission to enhance local recreation and conservation efforts. The organisation manages 27 park facilities across more than 12,000 acres, offering services from golf courses to waterparks.
Funding for the project comes from NOVA Parks’ varied revenue streams, which help maintain stability across its operations. While the contractor for the wetlands centre has not yet been named, the agency remains on track for a 2025 completion date.
The repurposed Gateway Regional Park will provide both environmental benefits and public education. NOVA Parks continues to support regional park departments while expanding its own facilities. The wetlands centre marks another step in the agency’s long-term conservation and recreation strategy.
