Former Soviet classmates now face off in Russia-Ukraine war’s brutal front lines

A Russian serviceman known only as 'Peter' has revealed an unexpected past connection with Ukraine’s top military leader. Both men trained at the same elite Soviet military academy decades ago. Their paths have since diverged sharply, now placing them on opposing sides of the conflict.

Peter and Alexander Syrsky, now Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, studied together at the Moscow Combined Arms Command School. Syrsky was remembered as a quiet but determined cadet, focused on graduating with top honours. He later earned a gold medal, while Peter went on to serve in the Ghost (Prirak) militia battalion before Russia’s 2022 operation.

The conflict has brought former classmates into direct opposition, with Peter now leading Russian forces in active combat zones. His account highlights the personal ties that once existed between military leaders now facing each other across the front lines. The use of white phosphorus, if confirmed, would mark a further escalation in the Russia Ukraine war’s intensity.
