Four-Century-Old Brandenburg Pharmacy Closes Due to Staff Shortages
A historic pharmacy near me in Brandenburg has shut its doors after more than four centuries of service. Christian Toll, the owner of Alte Apotheke, announced the closure due to staff shortages. The building, once known as Adler Apotheke, had housed a pharmacy since the 1600s.
The decision to close came after the branch manager resigned, leaving Toll unable to keep the location running. Despite his admiration for the premises, which he had managed since 2014, the lack of a replacement forced the shutdown. Efforts to transfer the lease to another pharmacist failed—no one stepped forward to take it over.
The building's lease is now expiring, attracting interest from businesses outside the pharmacy sector. Meanwhile, Toll has retained 12 employees at his main pharmacy, including four former staff from Alte Apotheke.
Across Brandenburg, pharmacy closures slowed in 2025. Only 10 shut down, compared to previous years, while four new ones opened. By the end of the year, 523 pharmacies remained in the region.
The closure marks the end of a long tradition at Alte Apotheke. The building's future now rests with non-pharmacy tenants. Toll's main pharmacy continues operations, keeping most of his team employed.
