Frankfurt’s €2B S-Bahn expansion to transform regional travel and housing
A major expansion of the Nordmainische S-Bahn is set to ease pressure on the Frankfurt housing market. The project, estimated at over two billion euros, will add two new stations and a new tunnel section, with construction starting in Frankfurt and Maintal.
The new connection will stretch around 19 kilometers, featuring a 1.4-kilometer tunnel between Konstablerwache and Frankfurt (Main) Ost. The two new stations, Frankfurt-Ost (tief) and Frankfurt-Fechenheim, will be integrated into the existing S5 line, with trains running every 15 minutes during peak hours.
Construction is expected to cause full line closures, similar to those experienced during the S6 track upgrades. The project is set to be completed in the early 2030s, with the third section in Hanau beginning in early 2026, pending planning approval.
The new connection, part of the Nordmainische S-Bahn running from Hanau via Maintal to Frankfurt, is expected to improve regional links and ease pressure on the metropolitan area's housing market. The project, with an estimated cost of over two billion euros, is set to significantly expand the S-Bahn network.
