Frankfurt’s U4 and U5 subway lines restore full service on August 18
Frankfurt’s U4 and U5 subway lines will return to full service on August 18, 2023. The move follows months of reduced frequencies caused by staff shortages after the COVID-19 pandemic. Passengers can now expect more trains, especially during busy times of the day.
In early 2024, VGF had cut services on the U4, U5, and other lines due to a lack of train operators. The reduced timetable lowered Frankfurt’s subway and tram capacity by about 7%. Since then, the company has steadily hired more drivers, making the return to full service possible.
The changes mark a step toward pre-pandemic service levels for Frankfurt’s subway network. More frequent trains aim to ease overcrowding and reduce wait times for daily commuters. Further improvements may follow if VGF meets its hiring targets in the coming year.
