Free Botox for Two Hours: Duisburg Clinic Sparks Safety Debate
Controversial Promotion: Duisburg Shopping Center Offers Free Botox on Opening Day
A beauty clinic is drawing attention—and criticism—with a bold opening-day stunt at Duisburg's Forum shopping center: for the first two hours, it will offer free Botox injections.
How do you outsmart aging? Fitness, diet, mindset? Too mundane. How about a quick Botox jab during your lunch break at the mall—then back to the office, wrinkle-free? What was once a luxury reserved for celebrities has now become part of everyday life—even in shopping centers.
Now, a new aesthetic clinic opening in Duisburg's Forum mall is promising instant beauty fixes. But its launch promotion—free Botox treatments for the first two hours—has sparked controversy.
Medical Experts Voice Concerns
Botox, medically known as botulinum toxin, is a neurotoxin. In cosmetic medicine, it is used in highly diluted form to relax muscles and smooth wrinkles, most commonly on the forehead, frown lines, and crow's feet. Detlev Schneider, a neurologist and deputy medical director of the Botulinum Toxin Outpatient Clinic at BG University Hospital in Duisburg, primarily treats patients suffering from chronic migraines, muscle spasms, or eyelid twitches.
"We must not give the impression that Botox can be treated like a party favor." — Detlev Schneider, Head of the Botulinum Toxin Clinic at BG Hospital Duisburg
Administering botulinum toxin requires extensive experience, he stresses. Schneider treats around 1,500 patients a year and has worked in the field for 25 years. "If injected too close to the eyeball, for example, there's a risk of temporary double vision," he warns. The idea of patients receiving treatments between shopping and coffee breaks is deeply concerning to him.
Heavy Social Media Promotion—But Questions Remain
The free Botox offer is being heavily advertised on social media, including through giveaways. However, it remains unclear who will perform the procedures or how patient consultations will be handled on-site. The company has not responded to a written inquiry from WDR. Its website states: "An experienced doctor will analyze your facial expressions, muscle activity, and skin structure, then discuss your goals and desired results with you."
Regular treatments start at €149, but the effects last only three to six months, requiring repeat sessions. The clinic lists minor redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection site as possible side effects. However, experts emphasize that such procedures should only be carried out by highly trained medical professionals—even though serious complications are rare.
