Free Stasi Records Advisory Session Opens in Heringen on May 7
The Federal Archives Stasi Records Agency Erfurt will host a free public advisory session in Heringen on Thursday, May 7, 2026. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the committee meeting room of Heringen Town Hall. Staff will guide citizens on accessing Stasi records and related services.
Attendees can learn how to apply for Stasi file inspections, which require a valid photo ID like a passport or national ID card. Applications must be submitted in person or through the relevant office. The session will also cover requests about deceased or missing relatives, anonymisation of released records, and decoding Stasi codenames.
On-site support will be available, including consultations and application assistance. Similar services are offered at other locations, such as the archives in Halle (Saale) and Leipzig. Informational materials on using Stasi records for research and media will also be provided. The venue, Heringen Town Hall (Obere Goethestraße 17), is fully wheelchair accessible. No fees apply for the advisory service.
The event aims to simplify access to Stasi records for German citizens. Those attending will receive direct help with applications and queries. The session reflects ongoing efforts to make historical records more accessible to the public.
