Free Voters' Union reclaims Main-Spessart in decisive runoff victory
Christoph Vogel of the Free Voters' Union (Freie Wähler) has won the runoff election for district administrator of Main-Spessart. He secured 59.8% of the vote, defeating CSU incumbent Sabine Sitter, who received 40.2%. The result marks a shift in local leadership after years under different administrations.
The election took place on a backdrop of changing political control in the district. In 2020, Sabine Sitter of the CSU had won the position, ending the Free Voters' long-standing hold on the office. This time, however, voters returned the district to the Free Voters, reversing the previous outcome.
Voter turnout stood at 55.5%, slightly lower than in some past elections but still reflecting strong engagement. Vogel's victory comes after Thomas Schiebel, the previous district administrator, chose not to run again in 2020, paving the way for Sitter's earlier win. The Free Voters' Union has deep roots in Main-Spessart, with Armin Grein, the group's founding figure, serving as district administrator from 1984 to 2008. Vogel's win now restores the party's influence in the region after a six-year gap.
With 59.8% of the vote, Christoph Vogel will take over as district administrator, replacing Sabine Sitter. The Free Voters' Union regains control of Main-Spessart, continuing a legacy that stretches back decades. The new administration will begin its term with a clear mandate from the electorate.
