Freiburg invites locals to redesign Zähringen's future in public consultation

Freiburg has kicked off a public consultation for the Zähringen district, inviting residents to shape its future. The initiative follows recent growth in northern Freiburg, where demand for schools, sports facilities and green spaces has risen sharply. An online platform is now open for locals to share their ideas on how public areas should be used fairly and sustainably.

The project is guided by the new Zähringen Framework Plan, designed to provide long-term direction for the area's development. It covers key sites such as the cemetery, sports fields, Zähringen Park and open spaces west of the Rhine Valley Railway line. Funding comes from Baden-Württemberg's programme Gaining Space Through Inner Development, which supports smart urban planning.

Three specialist planning firms will each create a concept for the district's future. Their proposals must address mobility and sports, education and childcare, as well as community cohesion and integration. An independent commission will then choose the strongest idea for further refinement. Residents can contribute online until March 12, with more ways to get involved planned for later this year. The push for better infrastructure comes after the *Nordbahnhof* quarter transformed a former freight yard into housing for 2,500 people, improved transport links and expanded cycling routes. This latest phase aims to build on that progress by ensuring Zähringen's spaces meet the needs of a growing population.

The selected plan will form the basis for future development in Zähringen. It will determine how public spaces are allocated and what facilities—from playgrounds to transport hubs—are prioritised. Final decisions will reflect both expert recommendations and the input gathered from local residents.
