Freiburg Mayor Race Shifts as Independent Candidate Valerie Schult Withdraws Over Health
Independent candidate Valerie Tabea Schult has pulled out of the Freiburg mayoral race. She announced her withdrawal on 22 March 2026, citing health issues as the reason. Her departure leaves ten candidates competing in the election set for 26 April 2026.
Schult had campaigned on a platform of nonviolent conflict resolution, greater citizen involvement, and sustainable urban planning. Her priorities included easing traffic congestion, promoting cycling and pedestrian-friendly policies, and tightening rent controls. As an independent voice, she offered an alternative to the main contenders: incumbent Martin Horn (backed by SPD, FDP, and Volt), Monika Stein (supported by the Greens and Left Alliance), CDU's Achim Wiehle, and AfD's Karl Schwarz.
Her decision came after a diagnosis of a precancerous condition, which she stated made continuing the campaign impossible. The final list of candidates was confirmed on 31 March, with no indication that her withdrawal would directly benefit any remaining rival. Voters will now choose from a reduced field when polls open next month.
Schult's exit narrows the race to ten candidates, each with distinct policy focuses. The election will proceed as planned on 26 April, with no further changes expected to the candidate lineup. Her campaign's emphasis on sustainability and housing may still influence voter priorities.
