Freiburg to Launch Refugee Payment Card System by October 10, 2022
Freiburg is set to introduce a payment card system for refugees by October 10, 2022. The cards aim to simplify financial support and management for those seeking asylum. The city has placed an order for the cards, although delivery and distribution dates remain uncertain.
The implementation of this system is currently in its introductory phase, as per a parliamentary document (Drucksache 17/9112) from Baden-Württemberg. Official measures for distribution began in July 2025. Initially, the cards will be used for new applications under the Asylum Seekers' Benefits Act.
In a later stage, the city will explore the possibility of converting existing cases to the payment card system, with some exceptions. The monthly cash amount for refugees is typically 50 euros per person, but higher amounts can be granted in exceptional cases. However, the city of Freiburg has expressed criticism of the payment card due to the anticipated high bureaucratic effort and costs.
Freiburg's refugee payment card system is expected to streamline financial support and management. Despite the city's concerns about bureaucracy and costs, the cards are set to be introduced by October 10, 2022, with new arrivals being the first to benefit from this new system.
