Freiburg’s political landscape shifts as digital news overtakes print media
A recent survey of 2,500 Freiburg residents shows the internet has become the main source of political news. The 2024 Freiburg Survey, published on the city’s official website, also highlights shifting political habits and engagement levels. Nearly one in three respondents now feel closest to Alliance 90/The Greens, marking strong local support for the party.
The survey, carried out every two years, reveals changing media trends. Only around half of those asked still rely on daily newspapers for political updates. Instead, digital platforms now dominate as the go-to source for information.
The findings confirm Freiburg’s active political culture, with high protest participation and election turnout. Digital media now lead as the primary news source, while traditional newspapers continue to lose ground. The survey also underlines the city’s strong Green support and a growing number of voters who no longer align firmly with a single party.
