Freiburg's Ramadan Lights Vandalized Twice in Political Suspicion
A public Ramadan light installation in Freiburg has been targeted in two separate incidents. On February 21, a man was seen cutting cables at the Betzenhauser Torplatz display, causing damage. Police are now investigating possible political motives behind the vandalism.
The first incident happened at 11:15 AM on February 21, when a suspect was spotted damaging the light installation. Witnesses described him as wearing jeans, a dark parka, black shoes, leather gloves, and a Nike backpack. His face was partially covered by a tubular scarf.
The following day, three individuals attached a banner to the festive lights, hiding the original inscription. They appeared to film their actions before leaving the scene. Authorities have yet to assess the full extent of the property damage caused. Police believe the incidents may have been politically motivated. However, no widely reported cases of similar attacks on Ramadan light displays or cultural events in Germany have occurred in the past five years. Anyone with information is urged to contact the police at +49 761 882-2880.
The investigation into the vandalism at Betzenhauser Torplatz remains ongoing. Police are reviewing evidence and seeking witnesses to identify those responsible. The damaged installation is part of a public celebration during Ramadan, a significant event for the local community.
