Merz and the Adenauer-Mercedes - Friedrich Merz admires Adenauer's vintage Mercedes-Benz ahead of CDU conference
Ahead of the CDU party conference, the focus is on motions and meetings. The chancellor also made a brief detour fitting for Stuttgart, Germany's automotive hub.
Riding in an armored official car is part of Friedrich Merz's daily routine as chancellor. But before the party conference in Stuttgart, the CDU leader inspected a special limousine—the kind last used as an official vehicle by Germany's first chancellor, Konrad Adenauer (CDU). Painted black with plush carpeting inside, Merz circled the car, remarking, "Very impressive."
The 1959 Mercedes-Benz 300 had been conveniently parked near the conference venue, as a classic car show was taking place on the Stuttgart trade fair grounds. Inside the back seat, Merz found a box of "fine old German cigars" and, as he called the car, took a peek under the hood of "this little treasure." His verdict: "A beautifully tidy engine."
After his brief excursion, Merz moved on to meetings with the CDU's top bodies to prepare for the party conference on Friday and Saturday. "My next official car," he joked before heading to his next appointment.
