From childhood chores to key roles in a family heating business

A lifelong connection to the family business has shaped one worker's career from an early age. Starting as a child helping clean the office, they now handle key roles after seven years of full-time experience. Their mother's entrepreneurial journey laid the foundation for two companies in the heating industry—one focused on oil tank services, the other on fuel supply and system maintenance. The author's mother first launched a business specialising in heating oil tank removal and replacement. Years later, she expanded by founding a second company, this time supplying heating oil and servicing heating systems. The author's own path began with weekend office chores as a child, followed by summer work while studying.

After graduating, they officially joined the company as an office assistant. Over time, their responsibilities grew to include coordinating orders, managing sales, drafting contracts, and overseeing accounting and scheduling. Today, they handle a wide range of administrative tasks and understand the business inside out.

The workplace dynamic is uniquely personal. Their older sister serves as their direct supervisor, often treating them like a younger sibling—especially during busy or stressful periods. The author credits their family's support for preparing them well, both professionally and personally. With seven years of full-time experience, the author now plays a central role in the family-run companies. Their deep knowledge of operations and close-knit teamwork with relatives have built a strong foundation. The business continues to operate in the heating sector, though broader industry trends remain separate from its specific growth.
