From football legend to Bordeaux's political pitch: Johan Micoud's bold move
Bordeaux's political scene has shifted in recent years, with sustainability and local infrastructure shaping voter priorities. Now, a familiar face from the city's football history is stepping into the arena. Johan Micoud, the former Girondins de Bordeaux midfielder, has entered municipal politics ahead of the upcoming elections.
Micoud, who played 260 matches for Girondins and has lived in Bordeaux since retiring, had never considered a political career. That changed last autumn during a dinner with friends. There, he met Philippe Dessertine, an economist and independent candidate running in the municipal elections. Dessertine's vision persuaded him to join the campaign by January.
Sports policy sits at the heart of Micoud's platform. He wants to ensure universal access to sport and develop a new sports hub around the Stade Atlantique. For him, the energy of a campaign mirrors the passion of football—both require teamwork and dedication. His entry comes as Bordeaux's political focus has broadened beyond green policies. Under Mayor Pierre Hurmic (2021–2026), projects like tram expansions and stadium upgrades gained traction. These everyday concerns—traffic, infrastructure, and quality of life—proved decisive in the 2026 local elections.
Micoud's move from the pitch to politics adds a new dynamic to Bordeaux's municipal race. His emphasis on sports access aligns with the city's recent push for community-focused projects. The election will show whether his football legacy translates into voter support.
