From teacher to dessert entrepreneur: A Komi woman's sweet success story
The Komi Republic has declared 2026 the 'Year of the Village' to boost rural development. Meanwhile, one local resident has already turned her passion into a thriving business. Tatiana Kukolshchikova, from Vizzinga in Sysola District, now runs a successful dessert company after years of teaching. Kukolshchikova's journey began with a degree in education from Syktyvkar State University. She spent years working as a kindergarten teacher and methodologist before pursuing her entrepreneurial dream. The decision came in 2022, inspired by her husband's military service.
Her business specialises in custom cakes, cupcakes, and cheesecakes, all made with natural ingredients. The product range keeps expanding, offering locals handmade desserts with a personal touch. In 2024, she secured over 160,000 rubles in state funding to launch her venture. The 'Rural Work: Stay and Grow' project supports similar initiatives across Komi's rural districts. Sysola District alone currently has 105 job vacancies across different sectors. While exact figures on state-backed entrepreneurs remain unclear, Kukolshchikova's success highlights the potential of local businesses.
Kukolshchikova's story shows how determination, state aid, and family values can create opportunities. Her business now stands as an example of rural entrepreneurship in Komi. With 2026 approaching, more initiatives like hers may gain momentum under the 'Year of the Village' campaign.
