Fuel shortages strike Gull stations as Middle East tensions spike oil prices
Fuel shortages have hit several Gull petrol stations for the second time in three days. The issue comes as global oil prices surge due to tensions in the Middle East. Some areas in New Zealand have seen petrol prices climb above $3 per litre, adding pressure on local supplies.
The self-serve Gull station at Rosebank roundabout in West Auckland ran dry on Saturday night. Another driver, Lloyd McInnes, found no fuel available at the same location. Meanwhile, Tasman petrol station in Epsom was selling unleaded at $2.72 per litre on Saturday, with no spare containers in stock.
Gull operates 113 stations, mostly in the North Island, and faced unusually high demand on Sunday. The company is now working to restock and meet customer needs. Despite the shortages, authorities confirm no major supply disruptions have occurred. The conflict in the Middle East has driven up oil prices sharply. Kerosine costs jumped from around 85–90 USD per barrel to 150–200 USD by March 2026. Air New Zealand has raised ticket prices and withdrawn its 2026 earnings forecast as a result. Petrol prices also rose to NZD 2.71 per litre by March 9, marking a 1.5% increase from the previous month. The Strait of Hormuz, a key oil shipping route, handles about 20% of global oil consumption—around 20 million barrels daily. US President Donald Trump has urged countries to secure the strait to protect oil supplies. New Zealand's Ministry of Business, Innovation and Enterprise reports the country holds 52 days' worth of petrol, diesel, and jet fuel reserves.
Gull continues efforts to stabilise fuel availability across its stations. Authorities are monitoring global developments and coordinating with suppliers to prevent further shortages. The situation highlights the impact of international tensions on local fuel markets and prices.
