Fueling strategy unveiled: Action plan revealed

In a significant stride towards sustainable aviation, the New Flying Alliance was officially launched on 15 September 2025. This initiative, spearheaded by the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, aims to increase the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) beyond EU quotas, with a focus on business flights and later private travelers.

The New Flying Alliance is a collaborative effort involving key companies and institutions, including those involved in SAF production and certification. Partners include Synhelion, Climeworks, neustark, Swiss Airlines, and various other organisations such as the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), and Stuttgart Airport GmbH.

The alliance's goal is multifaceted. It aims to avoid emissions by directly deploying climate-friendly kerosene, promote the use of SAF, raise public awareness, and advocate for better framework conditions. The alliance calls for clear, standardized processes for accounting and certification of SAF, physical availability of these fuels in Baden-Württemberg, and a transparent book-and-claim system for allocating emission savings through booking and claiming.

The New Flying Alliance complements the reFuels Action Plan, providing a concrete approach in aviation. The reFuels Action Plan, with official supporters like Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe GmbH, DHL Group, eFuel Alliance e.V., en2x, and many more, identifies eight key levers for facilitating the transition to industrial production. These include a European Book-&-Claim system and functional verification chain for SAF.

The press release categorises the New Flying Alliance under Education and Science, Research, Climate Protection, and Transportation. For queries and further information, the Ministry of Transport can be contacted via email at the Press Office or through a contact form on their website.

This new alliance marks a significant step forward in the pursuit of sustainable aviation, reflecting broader industry cooperation in advancing SAF. As the alliance works closely with regulators to improve framework conditions and promotes public awareness, the future of eco-friendly aviation in Baden-Württemberg and beyond looks promising.
