Fugitive from psychiatric facility caught at German-French border crossing
A 27-year-old Syrian man was arrested at the Kehl border crossing after failing to show valid identification. Authorities discovered he had an outstanding warrant for grievous bodily harm and had been missing from a psychiatric facility since May 2021.
The man was stopped during a routine check at the German-French border. He could not provide any legal documents for entry or residence in Germany. This led to an additional charge of attempted illegal entry.
The man is now serving the remainder of his sentence in a secure psychiatric facility. His arrest also resolves the outstanding warrant for his escape in 2021. German authorities continue to enforce border controls and detention protocols in such cases.
